On the sunlit slopes of the Serbian mountains grows a small lilac flower. Every year, during the drought season, it withers and seems to die. But with the first drops of rain, it revives and blooms again. Due to its unusual qualities, it has been given the symbolic and resonant name “Phoenix Flower.” For Serbia, this flower became a symbol of ceasefire and the country’s restoration after the losses of the First World War. Such a delicate and precise symbol was chosen to represent the Revival of an entire nation. It is not a weapon, nor brute force — but tenderness and love. The story behind this symbol resonates deeply with me and became the foundation of my painting, which is named “Phoenix Flower.” In this work, I focused on states of being that any person can understand, regardless of nationality. When a person almost dies inside due to grief or loss, they need to find the strength to be reborn into life. This strength is love; it rekindles our inner light and our drive to create and grow.
